About our training
Our training is based on a conditioned response that begins at the pup's moment of birth, is imprinted into our pups and is subsequently tied to their survival instincts. We have never needed to force fetch our dogs because that type of training is based on and requires fear
as a motivator to perform. However, our instinct/survival based conditioning is rooted in a dog's innate hunt instincts, pack mentality
and trust in the pack leader (alpha.) Survival is a stronger motivator than fear and therefore, our pups are highly driven to perform
without the use of pain, intimidation or fear. As a result, forming strong family bonds and being treated as a family (pack) member
does not "ruin" an Iron Spike pup's drive to hunt, but instead increases it. The stronger your pup bonds with you and your family,
the better he will perform. This is why Iron Spike pups are known for making great companions for both field and family.
Once the drive to hunt is securely attached to pup's survival instincts, we simply nurture, direct, encourage, reinforce and re-direct.
This has been our formula for success for over a decade. Our training method is unique because the goal is to produce a dog that retrieves because he LOVES to - and because he is instinctively driven to please the handler (alpha.) It's never because he's afraid to refuse. Just watch the joy and confidence with which our dogs perform. Look into their eyes - bright & willing. We don't need to break a dog's spirit
to get results. Our humane approach to training has resulted in hundreds of successful hunting & family companions placed in homes
of waterfowl and upland game bird hunters across the United States and Canada.
In addition, our unique training method has been used to rehabilitate force fetch "wash-outs" and gun shy dogs. Poor, ineffective or
overly harsh training techniques will cause a dog to attach an undesirable conditioned response (withdrawal, bolting, cowering, fear biting,
submissive urination, lock-up or melt-down) to a stimulus ("fetch" command, seeing or hearing a gun, seeing or wearing an e-collar.) This happens often enough as a result of force fetch or poor training skills, that a term has been coined for it: "wash-out." The dog fears
the stimulus and anything associated with it so severely, that the dog suffers a mental breakdown and is unable to perform. Because our training is trust-based and rooted in a dog's instinctive behavior, we can often reverse a break down by detaching the negative conditioned response from the stimulus. We can then replace the stimulus and associate the desired response with something positive to produce desirable behavior. We are able to do this because we work with each dog, individually, based on it's unique temperament & canine psyche, rather than rely on a static "system" that doesn't allow for variances in canine responses. We have a wide range of training techniques, tactics and strategies that enable us to attain the desired responses across a wide variety of dogs.
